In an unsettling case, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee arthroplasty inadvertently used a right sided prosthesis for a patient's left knee. Whilst it was accepted that incorrect labelling may have contributed to the error, it was the surgeon's attempt to cover up the mistake that resulted in his erasure from the GMC register.

A very important reminder, for all healthcare practitioners, to be open and honest when a mistake is realised.
